The diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel as an alternative to petrol or gasoline engines. Both these engines function by creating an explosion in a closed piston chamber. The explosion is caused inside the cylindrical chamber due to the burning of fuel. The only difference between both these engines is the cause of the explosion. A spark from the spark plug causes the ignition in a petrol engine whereas in a diesel engine, the heat generated in the chamber causes the fuel to get ignited.

Different Parts of a Diesel Engine

Cylinders: Similar to most of the other engines, the diesel engine has multiple cylinders. It is usually arranged in the form of a ‘V’ or a straight line. There are alternate cylinders on either side which are tilted on to one side.

Piston head: Another important part of an engine includes the piston head which moves up and down through the hollow cavity in the cylinder.

Valves: There are two valves at the top of the engine which includes the intake valve and the exhaust valve.

Fuel filters: Most of these engines use two different types of fuel filters so as ensure that the engines are free from block ups.

Glow plugs: These plugs are mainly used to heat the engine. It also prevents the formation of black soot in the engine.

Diesel engines are used in all types of vehicles which include passenger cars, buses, trucks and other vehicles. It is also used to power motor boats and locomotive engines. It can be used in most of the farm equipments too. It is widely used as stand alone power generators.

However, these engines vary from one another on various grounds. Some of these engines have two, four or six cylinders. The capacity of the cylinders varies from one another. The cylinders used in cars are entire different from the ones used in motor boats. Some of the cylinders are in a straight line or arranged in a ‘V’.

In cars, trucks and buses, these engines are connected directly to the gear box. But in large ocean liners and locomotives, it powers the propellers and motors by generating electricity.

Some Important Benefits

Most people prefer to use diesel engines rather than petrol or gasoline engines as it is more efficient. As it includes more calorific value, it gives more efficiency than petrol engines for a specific volume. It is also considered to be more reliable and efficient than the petrol engines due to the absence of spark ignition systems. This negates the possibility of power failure even during damp climatic conditions.

The possibility of radio frequency emissions is also negated due to the absence of coils, wires and spark plugs. Radio frequency emission can often cause interferences with the communication and navigation equipments used in most of the aviation and marine applications.
